I have been thinking a lot about "cafeteria mormonism" lately. I like the idea that we should be able to pick and choose the things that we believe in. I hate the idea that believing has to be an "all or nothing" deal.

The scriptures have instruction about how to know if...
...something is of God. "By their fruits ye shall know them" is often quoted.

Today I thought of Alma 32 (Book of Mormon). Alma talks about the word of God as a seed. If you plant it in your heart and it grows, then you know that it is a good seed.

This is usually used in a...
...way to convince people to give the church a chance. But I don't think i have ever heard this verse utilized:
Alma was Marie Kondo-ing scripture before Marie Kondo existed! I think all members of the church should be "cafeteria mormons." We should look at the current teachings and ask ourselves, "is this a good seed?" "Does this spark joy?"

For example, if paying tithing in the form...
...of donating to the church doesn't spark joy for you, or feel right, you should be able to do something different, like donate to a cause you support. It doesn't make you less of a member and it doesn't make you less worthy.

Anyway, I think about this a lot. I hope this...
...can help someone out there. :)
