[THREAD] While doing my masters in public policy at the @LKYSch, one of the most important classes I took was Communication in Public Leadership. I was convinced that clear and consistent communication by a public leader is integral to good governance.
World over, we see effective public leaders like PM Lee, Jacinda Ardern communicating to and with the people regularly, conveying updates, conducting press conferences, taking questions, and offering support. I see a few chief ministers trying to do that in India too.
They hold regular press conferences, take questions, express solidarity, and offer a sense of calm. What is surprising (or not) is that in the comments section, you will find people abusing these leaders for taking out the time to address the public.
The most repeated comment is-'Stop doing these press conferences and go work'. As if communicating with people is not a part of their job. After taking this class on communication, I've started judging leaders by how clearly, effectively, and consistently leaders communicate.
We have very few of those but Indians, for some reason, think that if a leader is communicating, s/he is not working. In fact, logically, it should be exactly the opposite, esp in the time of a public health emergency.
The funniest part is that the same people think that when Modi is not holding press conferences, he's actually doing his job well, working on solutions. These idiots take pride in his lack of communication. I'm more convinced than ever that we elect the leaders we deserve.
TL;DR - we need to appreciate leaders communicating regularly. It shows their sense of accountability. We should question those who don't. More communication = more work. Leaders communicating regularly in India -
