Saradha Bali and Malini: The forgotten river of Bada danda, Puri.

Ever wondered why Bada danda sometimes mentioned as 'Saradha Bali'! Let's go through history.

Years ago there used to be a river flowing through Puri Bada danda named Malini, a tributary of Bhargabi.

Malini separated Bada deula and Gundicha temple. So in every #RathaJatra there used to be six chariots made for each side of the river. Then the servitors had to take the deities by boats to cross the river and then again pulled by Rathas to Gundicha temple.

Which obviously was very difficult seeing the stature of #RathaJatra.

At the time of Puri Gajapati king Narasingha Deba's reign, Queen 'Shraddha Debi' or 'Saradha Debi' had a dream one day, about Jagannath ordering her to have a unstoppable continuous #RathaJatra with 3 Rathas.
Then Queen 'Saradha' ordered and had the river closed by filling sands in the river, which later known as 'Saradha Bali' in honour of Queen Saradha. Since then #Rathajatra is being completed by three chariots only above the Saradha Bali.
