Imagine thinking a fucking fishing village where 90% of the land mass is on the "mainland" from a geographical standard point and *all* the residents are technically descendents of "mainlanders" would've gotten any seperate "identity" had it not been for British colonization.
Even the 3000 people who were on the Hong Kong island before the British came were descendents of "mainlanders" who share the same languages and culture as their mainland cousins. It was only a fishing island back then ffs.
The Hong Kong island was the original Hong Kong which is only 30% larger than fucking Manhattan. The rest of modern Hong Kong was never called Hong Kong before the gradual colonial occupation of the British. The entire HKer identity is the product of colonialism.
Before the British came Hong Kong and Shenzhen were called Xinan *county*.
Fishermen can *swim* from Hong Kong island to the geographical "mainland". It's that close.
Also the Cantonese-hakka rivalry is part of the greater inter-Han tribal rivalry that has been going on for hundreds of years in Guangdong. The discrimination faced by Hakkas in HK is old Cantonese tribalism + classism. The vast majority of people in modern HK are either very 6/7
recent Cantonese immigrants or descendents of them, many went to Hong Kong to "flee communism". Now ask yourself the class character of people who "flee communism". 7/7
Yuen long, a working class Hakka district in Hong Kong has been frequently demonized and harressed by HK protesters bc they're not buying protesters' pro-colonial BS. A quick search for Yuen long on Twitter will yield you thousands of propaganda tweets painting Yuen long 8/9
residents as commie spies, pro-China thugs and poor peasants despite the fact that the ancestors of many Yuen long residents have been living there for hundreds or even thousands of years longer than the recent Cantonese immigrants. 9/9
