Statement from Council Chair George Handley:
We have learned with great shock and disappointment that during a protest last evening a man used a handgun to shoot and injure an elderly citizen of our community who was in his vehicle passing through the area on an errand.
We have learned with great shock and disappointment that during a protest last evening a man used a handgun to shoot and injure an elderly citizen of our community who was in his vehicle passing through the area on an errand.
As a city council, we repudiate this senseless act of violence. We are still learning more about what happened, including other possible acts of violence and aggression.
We have appreciated and respect the peaceful protests that have already happened in our community in recent days. We hear the voices of concern on behalf of people of color in our community and in our nation.
We also support our police officers who at the risk of their own safety work hard to protect free speech and ensure public safety.
We plead with the citizens of Provo to continue to stand by the principles of fairness, justice, and peace, which are fundamental values of our community, and honor the rule of law, a bedrock principle of American democracy.
This terrible act of violence does not reflect these values and principles, nor do we believe it represents those who have peacefully and passionately expressed their voice in protest.
These recent events should not overshadow the real grievances of people of color nor undermine or disrespect the brave service of our police officers. This is a time for restraint and calm.
Let us avoid rushing to judgment and allow our police to do their work of investigation and of protecting our safety and liberties.
Freedom of speech and the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances are essential rights of the people of this nation. We welcome all voices and honest differences of opinion to help us direct the future of our city.
Many people have taken the time to reach out to us to ask about the Provo Police Department and request potential reforms. These important conversations should not be rushed. This process is underway.
Mayor Kaufusi, Chief Ferguson and the entire police department remain committed to the highest standards of performance on our behalf and we are grateful for their continued commitment to work with the public to build trust and ensure safety and goodwill. --
