On this rainy and dreary day I thought we can take a step back to historic Calgary. This book recently came into my possession and it has some great pictures I want to share #yychistory #yycheritage
Here is a great shot of the DT looking SW with the Palliser Hotel, Grain Exchange & Hudson Bay Bld all featured. The Palliser Hotel was built in 1911-1914 & was built entirely of steel and rinforced concrete. The Grain Exchange was built in 1910 was the first high-rise structure.
First up is the homes of Eugene Coste aka the “Father of Natural Gas in Canada” and Senator Patrick Burns. The Burns house was demolished in 1956. The Coste house is listed on the heritage inventory - https://www.calgary.ca/PDA/pd/Pages/Heritage-planning/Discover-Historic-Calgary-resources.aspx?dhcResourceId=476 #yychistory #yycheritage
The Centre Street Bridge was built in 1915-1916 and Central Memorial Park was developed in 1912. Both resources are designated as a Municipal Historic Resource. In the background you can see Haultain School which burned down in 1964 #yychistory #yycheritage
In this picture two of the churches are still standing. First Baptist Church was built in 1911 and is listed on the heritage inventory but is not designated. Knox United was built in 1912 and is both a provincial and municipal protected heritage site #yychistory #yycheritage
The Land Titles building was demolished in the late 1960s. The Courthouse built in 1912-14 was Calgary's second. The Central Memorial Library was built in 1912 and was the first first public library in Alberta. The library is a provincial heritage site.
The CPR Station (circa 1907), along with the bulk of 9th Avenue save for the Palliser Hotel, was demolished in 1966 to make way for the Calgary Tower (formerly the Husky Tower) and Palliser Square.
The Hudson's Bay Company Department Store (1913), built 1911-13, and significantly expanded in 1929 and 1956-57, is a monumental, six-storey, Commercial-style building, clad in ornamented, cream-coloured terra cotta.
Neither the Southam Block or Herald Block are still around.

The Southam Chambers (Herald Building), built 1912-13 and restyled in 1967 is a six-storey office and retail building located in core of downtown Calgary.
I thought this was a great picture of @mountroyal4u when it was originally downtown on 7th Ave (across from the Kirby Centre) Heritage Hall @sait looks majestic as always! Heritage Hall is also designated as provincial heritage resource.
All of the schools in this picture (except St Mary's) are still standing. McDougall Centre is now the home of the @YourAlberta in Calgary. And Central High School is home to the @yyCBEdu administration offices. Only Connaught is still in use as a school.
Hope you enjoyed this historic look back at our fair City. If you want to learn more about the heritage inventory and all of the heritage buildings we have definitely checkout the Inventory of Evaluated Historic Resources - https://maps.calgary.ca/DiscoverHistoricCalgary/
