I've had a bunch of conversations with people looking to get into VC over the last month. These have been wonderful convos & I'm more excited than ever for the next generation of VCs. 🚀

Here's the advice I've been giving -- THREAD 👇
1/ Figure out what you want. The VC world is big and there are so many different types of funds and roles. The best way to do this is by talking to people who are willing to walk you through the nuances of the VC landscape and then start to narrow down what might be best for you.
2/ Talk to as many people as possible. Unfortunately, much of venture recruiting is still referral and network driven, this means that talking to and meeting as many people as you can is important. Start with your network if you can, but if not, cold emails are great too.
3/ Show your curiosity & excitement. Investing is a long game, you need to be truly excited about it to be successful. Read newsletters, industry specific news, listen to podcasts, etc. There is so much information readily available, use that to prove you're motivated & excited.
4/ Do your homework. Once you land an interview (or even just a casual chat), show up prepared. Know the person's background, research their firm, know their portfolio companies, & ask targeted questions that show you put in the work. PLUS always ask for any intros they can make.
5/ Keep in touch. Don't just have one conversation and drop it as you're networking, follow-up at a reasonable cadence & if possible send them companies or articles that relate to their investment thesis. They may not have been hiring when you spoke, but that can change quickly.
6/ Ask for help. Most people are more than willing to review a resume, help with case studies, and make intros, but if you don't ask directly, they can't help. Be clear about what you need, people are busy so don't be afraid to follow-up nicely.
7/ Be persistent. It's a long process. Sadly, there are not that many roles that open up every year, many smaller firms hire only once every few years, so be prepared for it to take a while to land the perfect role. Stay positive and keep meeting new people & doing the work.
