1/3 In 2012 the sheep paddock on Chipstead Downs was a largely scrubbed up site, patches of chalk grassland (CG) had to be hunted out. The sward was dominated by competitive parsnip and false brome (The site was briefly grazed that summer for a project to see what the sheep did)
2/3 By 2016- aggressive clearance on the site by fab volunteers. But the aggressive dominance of a few species required sheep grazing in the spring and summer to help. Despite strong opposition, being told the 'weak' and 'fragile' CG habitat cannot handle this, it went ahead
3/3 By 2019-2020 the sheep have turbo charged the restoration of a diverse and flower rich CG slope. Scrub is now manageable. Reduced rank species and a site buzzing with invertebrates. It's the long term not short. Sheep created CG...It is wonderful. Nature is tough.
