The furry commission artist community has a serious, rampant problem of lack of professionalism and scammy behavior. I am so tired of seeing people get fucked over by furry artists who don't know how to manage their schedule. (1/?)
If someone gives you money, you give them what they paid you for. It's not your client's fault that you have poor management skills and 'took too many commissions'. Stop using your mental health to guilt trip people who sent you money wanting to support you. This shit is NOT OK.
Offering commissions comes with responsibilities. It's not a 'I'll do it when I feel like it' thing. You have to honor what you were paid for. Clients earned that money, they expect you to do the same. Its not free money you can instantly spend then give them excuses for 2 years.
As a commission artist myself; please, holy shit, wake the fuck up. You are making this harder for all of us. You have no idea how many of my clients became regulars because 'You're the only one I know will actually give me what I paid for!' like wtf guys, this shit ain't normal.
I quit commissioning furry artists because it kept happening to me. I regularly commission artists that aren't part of the furry community and I get my art in reasonable delays.
I get frequent updates from them even if they have nothing new to show me, they're just keeping me in the loop so I don't feel forgotten. DO THIS. EVEN IF YOU HAVE NO PROGRESS. DON'T GRAB THEIR MONEY AND LEAVE THEM ON READ FOR THREE MONTHS.
ommissioners: Be nice and respect that art takes time. Don't expect a piece to be done overnight. Ask for updates every once in a while. I'm not telling you to ask daily or even weekly; once a month is reasonable imo. But don't let irresponsible artists steal your money.
Don't forget that Paypal offers a 180 days (roughly 6 months) buyer protection and they will give you your money back if you can prove you got nothing out of a purchase. When commissioning an artist, ask them if they are comfortable working within that time limit.
If an artist is professional and organized, they will likely accept. 6 months is plenty of time (please note that it highly depends on the type of commission and popularity of said artist, but 6 months is a reasonable timeframe to me).
And remember to NEVER, EVER pay through Friends & Family. It's against Paypal's TOS, could get your account suspended and your balance frozen, and offers NO PROTECTION if you get scammed. If an artist asks to be paid through F&F, run away.
This post applies to fursuit builders as well. Get your shit together. This is getting embarrassing. For real. And call out your friends who get away with fucking people over for a job. Stop being complete cowards. Kick scam artists out of the community. I'm sick of it. (11/11)
