After the latest round of 'Keir Starmer says something disappointing' here's a reminder that the role of the leader of the opposition isn't to stroke the egos of highly politicized left-wingers (of which I am one), but to win power and change the world.
The fact that the previous incumbent left Labour as far from power as it has been for the best part of a century, after stroking those egos hard for five years, should make some people ponder.
Yes, there is a risk he ends up compromising too much, winning power, and then 'being Tory'. Honestly, I would take even that. But still, aligning Labour unambiguously with statue-toppling activists is the Daily Mail leader writer's dream, and will make real change impossible.
Oh, and let's not forget that the default is the prolongation of without the slightest doubt the worst government in the history of UK democracy. We just can't afford this.
Bottom line, in UK politics all power belongs to the governing party. Labour has lost four elections in a row. The left can achieve nothing without winning, and I care about achieving change, not imagining it. This is my answer to all the objections in this conversation.
Also, this is the kind of voter Labour needs to be reaching out to if it wants to actually win. It’s probably not as ideologically satisfying as taking the knee, but he needs us too. And we need him if we want to do all the other stuff. https://bbc.in/38lrgBR
This doesn’t mean going Blue Labour. It means talking to people about the things that matter to them. Building a coalition, then getting s*** done.
