Citizens’ assemblies don’t exactly scream social distancing. But over time they could assist and inspire a successful transition to a ‘new normal’. Our new handbook suggests how to design and deliver them successfully and effectively.
Starting with the decision about whether or not to run a citizens’ assembly, this report moves chronologically through the different stages involved with planning, organising and delivering a successful process.
And although the handbook focuses on in-person assemblies, we hope the principles and insights can also support those designing online deliberative processes. Many of the fundamental aims, concepts and standards apply.
#ClimateAssemblyUK and #ConventionCitoyenne have both successfully concluded and the past months have seen rapid learning about the opportunities of digital deliberation. We hope this handbook can help to build this global wave of deliberative experimentation #delibwave
It is for anyone seeking to use deliberative engagement methods. Test, apply, adapt and learn from our guidance and let us know what you discover so we can continue to build our knowledge and understanding of deliberation #delibdem
Lots of the advice in the handbook is illustrated in the IiDP Case Studies report - a trove of real-world examples and personal stories also being launched today. It is co-authored by council staff that led the three IiDP assemblies at @dudleymbc @TestValleyBC and @GreaterCambs
The Innovation in Democracy Programme, commissioned by @DCMS and @mhclg, supported @dudleymbc @TestValleyBC and @GreaterCambs to design and deliver citizens’ assemblies. And none of it could have been remotely possible without the extraordinary work of @MiriamLevin1.
