After 3.5 beautiful years, my postdoc with @DavidWLawson is ending 😭. I want to highlight some of the things that made working with David exceptionally grand because I appreciate him, but also to highlight what a stellar postdoc supervisor looks like.
1) David invested in my career development and showed a genuine interest in supporting my learning even when there were not direct benefits to the project I was funded to work on.
2) David's care for my mental health was evident through his words and actions. The last few months during pandemic/civil unrest/no childcare? David said, "Take the time you need. I'm not expecting normal levels of productivity." And he meant it.
3) David supported me last year when I asked to work remotely so I could move closer to my family. I now live in Seattle near my fam and my kid gets to hang out with his cousins all the time❤️.
4) David was flexible and supportive when I had a kid in year 1 of my postdoc. Baby in the office? Cool. The 1 millionth time the kid was sent home from daycare for snot? No problem. Daycare randomly closed again? Do what you need to do. Talking about my breast pump again? 👍.
5) David advocated for me at our university at SO MANY points over the past 3 years, including fighting to get me a salary when the government shutdown meant we didn't have access to the NSF grant funding my position.
6) David encouraged me to take my vacation days and to actually NOT WORK while on holiday.
I could go on, but you get it - I got to be both passionate about my work AND non-work life (as it should be). Thanks for your support @DavidWLawson - I'm leaving this position with new skills and greater confidence in my abilities. It has been a genuine pleasure working w/ you.
Oh and thanks for that time we took 13 flights in 14 days, binge watched Dead to Me and ate pretty much all of the pastries in Paris-CDG 😎 @DavidWLawson
