A lesson on inclusivity 👏

Due to border lockdowns, I was unable to relocate to Stockholm to start new job. Starting in a huge org remotely +9 hrs off has been really isolating and tough.

When asked to be included in a sprint, this was the response:
While I appreciate the idea, it's completely missing the mark.

By pointing out how inconvenient it is to the bigger/in group, then asking the excluded person to make all the accommodations it gives the message that if you’re different/outside, you must take on the entire burden.
By citing all the people in the right timezone who can attend, it minimizes my potential contribution and makes it about him and his goals, rather than creating an environment of inclusion and belonging.

Design leads – especially those who are white/male – you can do better.
