Thinking about being working class in academia. I had no idea this job existed when I was growing up, I was essentially mentored into this job by women in the academy who came before me, there are lots of things I love about this job but I have no idea what else I can do.
As my two most significant mentors have gotten squeezed out of the academy by the neoliberalisation of Higher Education I wonder how much longer I can last. And then I remember that one of the reasons I do this job is because I have no idea what else I can do.
When I think about alternative careers I have no reference points. Asides from working in academia the only other jobs I know are in the service sector. I have nothing against this sort of work but if given the option I'd want to use the skills I have developed.
I really freaking hope that unis are serving their PGRs by actually telling them not just how their skills are transferrable, but the places they can be used to earn a good and secure wage. Because I have no idea.
