With the development of football over the past couple centuries, money has been at the forefront for young players in modern football. So here’s a thread on three youngsters which wasted their potential due to numerous reason but mainly their attitude or demand for big money.
Starting off with the most obvious example Ravel Morrison: He was highly praised by coaching staff and players at United with Rooney saying he was a country mile better than Pogba and Lingard at youth level and Ferdinand claiming he should have been a £100m player after his debut
Sir Alex wrote in his 2015 tome Leading that: Ravel Morrison might be the saddest case. He possessed as much natural talent as any youngster we ever signed, but over a period of years, the problems off the pitch continued to escalate and we had little option but to cut the cord.
He’s now on loan at Middlesbrough from Sheffield United so he can still turn things around but at 27 he can’t ever reach the potential he was once tipped for world class status but due to off field incidents that didn’t happen like only turning up for some training sessions.
Next up is Hachim Mastour: He was known as the Moroccan Messi due to his footwork and skills was wanted by numerous top clubs after AC Milan snapped him up from his hometown club for €550k at 14. He was promoted to the first team in the 13/14 season but only once named as a sub.
He even admitted in a interview with TMW that the move to AC Milan was a mistake at such a young age and should have opted for a move to a European club like Ajax to help his developmental a player and person. This is a famous quote about Mastour and he clearly didn’t listen.
Mastour now 22 is playing for his hometown club of Reggina in Serie C, he will never fulfill his potential as he hasn’t got much game time for them this season so it looks very unlikely he will be half as good as what was once said about him.
Lastly is Emre Mor: Most people haven’t heard that name in a long time. He started off his career in Denmark and was called the Turkish Messi during his FC Nordsjaelland days. He was snapped up by Dortmund for £8.78m in the 16/17 season this is where is downfall mainly happened.
There was a incident early on in his career at Lyngby BK where he openly challenged the coaching staff and unrest started at the club towards him. His attitude was terrible and still is then when you add in a big move at 18 that’s a disaster waiting to happen.
After just one season as he fell out with manager Thomas Tuchel and was sold to Celts Vigo. Mor now 22 on loan at Olympiacos has had his fair share of incidents including getting banned from the Celta Vigo training grounds for a month. Like the others he won’t reach his potential
