If anyone is wondering why i worded it this way it was purposeful and very specific -

1. We see afo *engineer* situations in whichs shigaraki will get physically harmed by *other people* instead of him https://twitter.com/madcapmath/status/1277277887985414144
2. We see afo do tangible harm to shig *personally* via neglect and financial and emotional abuse, but not *physical* injury
3. There are 14 unaccounted for years in which shigaraki lives with afo, with only afo and little to no outside contact, and *onscreen* we only really catch a glimpse of the begining and end of it.
You can make a lot of compelling arguments about why that, from a doylean perspective, doesnt matter and we should take what we *do see* at face value...but the bottom line is we dont witness a whole lot of shigaraki's upbringing and what we can use to *infer* with isnt pretty
(The fact that Shigaraki regularly ignores severe physical injuries like theyre nothing is, for instance, a little alarming, even if its just to add to his Creepy Villain Cred tm or designed to show how little what he's living constitutes as "life" etc etc meta reasons)
In conclusion there's *plenty* of onscreen abuse shig goes through at afo's hand and *plenty* more that's easy to speculate at, but a lot of ppl struggle with parsing abuse that isnt within an extremely narrow set of categories and very clearly legible
