Couple of clips on a very impressive showing from Sander Berge yesterday. Really came to the fore with his composure, technical quality and driving runs but added a bit of Sheff Utd aggressiveness, bite and most importantly upped his work rate massively.
Clip 1 - Love this little line breaking pass, sucks in the press and a great disguise on pass into Fleck. Looks simple, it really isn't that easy to execute well.
Clip 2 - Without doubt this was my personal highlight of his play yesterday. He aggressively pressed high and wide to force Arsenal to play longer/more direct rather than easily recycle the ball
Clip 3 - Another excellent example of his pressing causing a turnover. Closes off passing option inside and forces ball down the line. Sander was instrumental in helping us squeeze Arsenal in the 2nd half.
Clip 4 - Sander goes all way from deep CM area to pressing as the main CF. Brilliant work rate and again forces a turnover.
Clip 5 - This is what he did at Genk reguarly. Has technique & frame to be very press resistant. Turns well away from contact here, drives forward and gives a simple ball. May lead to nothing but fact is Sander gained us yards yesterday for the first time
Clip 6 - This is area most un-natural to Sander. He's never played this wide before in his career and Sheff Utd wide CMs act like wingers at times in spaces they need to occupy. Shows he knows that here, great strength and a very good pullback
Clip 7 - Another fine example of his pressing work causing a turnover. He went after Kola so many times in that 2nd half. Loved his work rate, intensity with which he pressed and way he closed off the passing lanes.
As we said yesterday we all knew he needed to time to adapt and improve and i think most of us thought this summer would be the time to adapt. As a young kid coming into this country/league is challenging enough, throw in covid and i genuinley feel sorry for the lad....
This showing was just a glimpse of what Sander can do and how Sheff Utd may improve elements of Sander too. That composure on ball, that technique with added tempo of play is an exciting thing to watch.
