This #SundayMorning held a moment that I want to remember. One of the times I experienced #gaslighting by my former (white) pastor, I was sitting @ a table of all white men when he told me his job was to keep minorities “in line” so we wouldn’t become “like the Black Panthers”1/5
Today, my current (white) pastor used a story about the activism of 2 Black Panthers as an example of love. He then proceeded to give one of the best descriptions of #allyship I’ve heard. 2/5
My old #church is more diverse in many ways compared to my current one. But the old one stops w/diversity of thought. Their public work re: #racism continues to be done on white male terms. That’s not the case w/my current church, even though externally it looks less diverse. 3/5
If you’ve been told something is awry in your church, heed the voice of the oppressed before you hold out longer for things to really change. I know what it feels like to keep hoping change is finally coming. But your BIPOC family needs you to vote w/your feet. Now. 4/5
If you’re BIPOC/have been the voice of dissent for so long like I was & need to leave your church, leave. Real allies & safe spaces are out here waiting for you. You can be free of investing in people who use your diverse presence to perpetuate #spiritualabuse #churchtoo 5/5
