Almost every night I walk around North Beach during the golden hour and I have the same thoughts:
How could they have built these dramatic buildings and thought that what was needed was prevent more from being built? How could you not crave more of this neighborhood character?

These giants stand gracefully, totally out of scale with everything around them. Every night the light is just a little bit different, the contrast is just a little bit different. The way the sunset reflects on their windows...
They look like the anti-SB50 posters.
They look like the anti-SB50 posters.
Seriously though. Out of scale buildings are so epic. I don't normally bother with the aesthetic arguments, since I think if you're making arguments about things over people you're a bit morally bankrupt...
But they truly are so epically beautiful.

Why in the world wouldn't you want your neighborhood to look like this? I don't use filters! These are *actual photos* of a neighborhood that built honking giant buildings in the middle of smaller apartments and even single family homes.
They are shockingly beautiful.

Look at all the variety of scale! That building is different than that other building! Gasp!
But it is a gasp of aesthetic pleasure! Giant apartment buildings are super cool to look at. And they mean you might get a corner store within walking distance.

At dusk the little windows start to glow. Life twinkling in the darkness. All different kinds of cozy little homes dotting the sky.
The variety of architecture and scale is charming and heartwarming. Why wouldn't we want more?

Look at that thin little tower in the background. A giant apartment building on a tiny lot. It is so freaking cool.
So many different kinds of homes clinging to the side the hill. The drama of these neighborhoods is enhanced by these towers.
Towers that are illegal to build currently.

Even slabby concrete and glass towers tickle my fancy. They glow in the evening light.
The contrast, the variety of eras and intentions and architectural thoughts make things lively. And sure, the people who live there probably like them as well.
Why wouldn't you want more?

What if they just plopped a twenty story tower next to your building?!?
Well, it turns out it's actually totally fine. It does not throw your neighborhood into a never-ending dystopia of hideousness.
It is actually just kind of gorgeous.

My only complaint with this view is that there aren't more giant buildings spiking the landscape. And new buildings often have to have public view spots on top. I'm bitter that there aren't new tall buildings that I could go up in and look down at the neighborhood from.
