*cracks knuckles* Here’s the thing I HATE where Finn’s arc was left of in TFA. I HATE how they set it up. In the marketing we were shown a Black Jedi ex Storm Trooper. (1/) https://twitter.com/reylochriso/status/1277423396163170304
The implications of a black character freeing themselves from enslavement and brainwashing to liberate them selves through spirituality and self discovery was ASTRONOMICAL. And as much as I love Rey that bait and switch hurt. (2/)
They BAITED black fans who continually have to contest with black characters in SW with undesirable traits. Lando though redeemed is presented as a traitor to a close friend. Mace though a Jedi is largely disliked by many for being the most assholey of the Jedi (3/)
Finn’s energy and exuberance and inherent empathy was a step away from this. Finn had the potential to be everything a Black kid looking up at the screen wanted and needed. (4/)
But instead they made Finn a coward. Yes he has every right to be afraid but he really didn’t need a whole movie to establish this. This was a lesson that could’ve been taught by Han and Poe in a few added scenes in TFA (5/)
Unfortunately Finn doesn’t learn this lesson in TFA forcing Rian’s hand to make Finn’s arc about the importance of making a stand and joining the fight. TLJ is foing a precarious balancing act with all of its plotlines. So yes, the pacing of Finn’s arc felt Off. (6/)
It was hard to sit through a whole movie of Finn going through a character arc that should’ve been completed in TFA (7/)
I love Poe. But Poe’s arc should’ve been Finn’s. Finn at the end of TFA becomes impassioned by the cause and radicalized by his fight with Ben so at the start of TLJ HE’s the hot header fighter willing to do foolish things for cause(8/)
Finn comes from an environment that doesn’t care about individuals. Sacrifice is inherent in war for the First Order. It would’ve been interesting to see Finn contend with the very different way the FO deals with war in comparison to the Resistance (9/)
Unfortunately TFA paints Rian into a box. Finn’s arc in TLJ is good for what Rian had to work with he built a bridge out of popsicle sticks but popsicle sticks still don’t hold up under a lot of pressure. (10/10)
