I regularly quote on prices and people disappear. I can’t live on the prices people would actually accept. I mostly avoid commission work for this reason.
Something like this takes me a really long time 15 to 20 hours. So the idea of selling it for US$100 kind of sickens me. https://twitter.com/alisa_aydin/status/1277005985274445825

If I was just doing an hourly rate I would probably charge AU$1400
But I would need to factor in materials and the fact you are getting a physical piece of work... so it would probably be around AU$2300 before framing.

Something like this took an hour, and while $70 for an hours work is fine, Im not sure I could actually sustain making one of these an hour for 8 hours a day for a 40hr work week, it takes a really huge amount of concentration and I find it very exhausting.
Anyway I’ve always been put off by the commissions market because people sell work for so little. No judgment but I feel like we could collectively raise the standards of living for artists all over if we all agreed on minim standards.
Here in Australia, we have laws that govern you must be paid for a minimum of 3 hours work regardless of how long you worked.
Our minimum wage is $19.49 (which horrifically is $13.38 usd)
Our minimum wage is $19.49 (which horrifically is $13.38 usd)
But this is for unskilled labour - not that the jobs this refers to are unskilled I’ve flipped burgers and quite frankly that was the hardest effing job I’ve ever done and hospo workers deserve way way way way more money.
On my first job in the industry I was paid $25/h which if you accounted for inflation would have been about 27-28 dollars per hour today.
If something takes you 5 hours as a freelance artist your rate would be $135 right? Wrong!!!
You need to factor in taxes, equipment, studio/home office rent, pension(aka super in Australia) aaaaand that you won’t be working full time.

So $27 + 50% for equipment (photoshop, computers and rent ain’t cheap yo) + 30% for taxes + 10% for super
27 + 13.5 + 8.1 + 2.7 = AU$51.3
So $35.23 x 3 at a minimum artwork cost of us$105.69 + cost of materials. - and that’s for a beginner artist.
Just my suggestion.

Obviously art that takes longer to produce should cost more..
Note that not long after my first gig I quoted $35-40/ hour to
@joewintergreen to work on his game and he was like “How about $50/ hour?” - on a project with very little budget that ultimately never came to fruition.
People like Joe are far and few between, treasure them.
