This week, a bunch of headlines have popped up saying that a Norwegian study has proven that you can go to the gym safely
Sounds like good news! Unfortunately, this isn't really true 1/n

2/n The study is here: https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.06.24.20138768v2.full.pdf
3/n Now, broadly speaking the study itself was an impressive effort that we should all try to emulate
4/n The researchers randomized people in Oslo to either go to their gym or not for 2 weeks, gave everyone detailed advice on how to avoid COVID-19 infections, and looked at what happened
5/n They found that people who were randomly assigned to attend their gyms were no more likely to catch COVID-19 than people who weren't
I.e. going to the gym didn't increase the risk of coronavirus!

6/n Sounds good right?
Sadly for us gym-goers, there's a HUGE caveat
In this study of nearly 4,000 people, only 1 person got COVID-19
Sadly for us gym-goers, there's a HUGE caveat
In this study of nearly 4,000 people, only 1 person got COVID-19
7/n This is perhaps not surprising, because during the time period of the study there were barely any COVID-19 infections in Oslo, a city of 820,000 people
8/n In other words, what this study showed is that gym doesn't increase your risk of COVID-19 when that risk is virtually 0% anyway
9/n Unfortunately, it tells us nothing about important questions such as:
- are gyms a risk for COVID-19?
- can you attend gym safely while reopening?
- could gyms be safe in areas with more COVID-19?

10/n I feel for the researchers to an extent, because they ran an impressive study, but realistically there's not much you can take away from this research aside from the fact that we should do more studies like it
11/n Gyms, like other places where people are closely confined for long periods of time, remain places where infection is likely to spread, and should probably be treated with caution
12/n I should add - I'm going to the gym (carefully)
I'm not sure that this is a good idea, and I may yet stop, but I certainly didn't base my decision on this trial
