A few thoughts from the person who collected the

demographic stats. https://twitter.com/jtannady/status/1276731449400602625

1. I collected this data because I have never worked in a team that looked like this before. I was curious about statistics.
Our team's racial diversity should never have been used as a shield to deflect valid criticisms about how

engaged with Black movements.

No one person can speak on behalf of any group they are a part of. This is true of any kind of identity.
The fact that we had x number of people of y identity on our team does not mean that we are we are automatically get a pass.

This was, however, meant to be a tongue in cheek jab at tech industry diversity stats.
No bar was "lowered". Nobody was a "diversity hire".
TBH the collective talent on the team still blows my mind (eng, design, PM, PR, writing etc.)

Thought leaders might be wondering, what did this magical hiring + talent acquisition process look like?
Easy. You add some emojis to your name on Twitter. Welcome to the team. You're hired!
Note that we stopped adding people at a certain point because the group got too big.

2. Why is "Black" its own category when Asians have breakdown?
This data was collected via freeform text input, string-matched, and tallied in an Excel spreadsheet. There is no dropdown box or radio button poll. If someone wanted to write "Latinx", they wrote "Latinx".

Demographic polls are complicated. Bucketing human beings cannot be perfect.
This data collection process was informed by the fact that I've never filled out a demographic poll I liked that didn't let me self-report my ethnicity somewhere.

3. I do think the data could have been visualised better to highlight the fact that this team is, in fact, majority Asian.
As one of the ppl who wrote "Chinese-Indonesian", it was important to me to list that subcategory. I don't see a lot of Southeast Asians around me in tech.

Lumping SEAsians under an "Asian" umbrella and saying that all Asians are overrepresented isn't helpful.
A lot of demographics don't have stats to talk about how underrepresented they are in tech. Southeast Asians happen to be one of them.

I appreciate everyone who raised comments/concerns about the these pie charts.
