Being a lazy Sunday, here’s some advice for applying for game art jobs. BG: I’ve been making 3D art for games for 20 years, and I’ve done a lot of staffing and reviewed a shitload of portfolios. Hopefully this is useful. These are in no particular order 1/10

1.) Make your life easier and use ArtStation for presenting your work. Its easy to navigate for potential employers and easy to manage. If you don’t, make the layout easy to navigate. Avoid fancy animations, wipes, all that shit. 2/10
Honestly, if I have to spend too much time navigating a portfolio website, theres a really good chance I’m gonna close it fast. 3/10
Make sure a link to your portfolio is front and center and very clear on your submission. I can’t tell you the number of applications I’ve reviewed where the portfolio link is either buried in the CV/cover letter or not even there 😬 4/10
Only put your best BEST work in the portfolio. If there is a piece you aren’t sure about, take it out. You need to grab the hiring manager/art lead/director and keep their eyes on your work because they are flipping thru scads of applicants. 5/10
Try to match your work to the art style of the studio you are applying to. A stylized portfolio for a super serious sci fi project may be a tough sell. HOWEVER, if you are mad good, a wise lead/director, may still want to talk. Styles can be taught. Sometimes. 6/10
For a 3d game art job, please Lord include finished, in-engine work. Keyshot renders are nice and all but I personally don’t hire for that. I need to know you can do finished work. 7/10
It really is important for me to see a lot of work in your portfolio. Its hard to judge your skillset with just one or two pieces. This happens fairly often. 8/10
If you happen to have personal art projects to share, that can be a big plus especially on small teams where you may need to riff without concept art. Its good to show the lead/director your design chops. But this isn’t a dealbreaker. 9/10
Anyway, just a few suggestions from a grizzled ancient. Hopefully something useful in there. 10/10
