Universities in Ireland have been slow to support academic and clinical activity in intensive care. To date, there are just 3 professorial posts in critical care medicine, one each in UCD, RCSI and UCG.

@UCDMedicine @tcddublin @RCSI_Irl @UCC
A relatively young specialty, recently recognised as a separate speciality by @MedCouncilIRL it punches above its weight in terms of clinical impact as we have seen with #coronavirus
Now everyone knows about ICU.

@ICSIreland @COAIrl @DorothyBreen2
ICU capacity and requirement for more trained ICU doctors is set to expand as
1. More complex surgeries and medical interventions are possible.
2. An increasing proportion of people living into their 80s, 90s.
3. Higher health and outcome expectations.
To attract and retain trained intensive care specialists we need to offer equal pay, reasonable working hours, career progression, academic acknowledgment and research support.
We can’t expand bed capacity without these doctors. @ProfPayEquality @Rheum2improve @DonnellyStephen
Critical care medicine is a wonderfully fulfilling specialty.

Now is the perfect time to model a satisfying career for students and younger doctors - by offering the conditions received in Australia/NZ/Can/US
We will all benefit from the seeds that we sow.
