During the 1940s & 1950s Ethiopia argued on international forums that Somalia was a geographically & historically part of Ethiopia and fought aggressively against Somali independence.
In the 1970s, under the guidance of the Soviet Union & Cuba, a plan was hatched to unite Somalia and Ethiopia; but this fell through due to technical issues emanating from personality of the heads of both countries. In both the 1970s & today, Somalis remain largely unaware about these conspiracies to merge their country with Ethiopia under communist and economic garbs.
