Born in 1853, in a town near jowhar, Hassan barsane was the biggest freedom fighter of his time who not only defeated the Abyssinian empire but simultaneously held back Italian rule for decades .
Hassan barsane was raised as a typical geeljire but was taught the fundamentals of Islam at a young age. He travelled around, from xamar to warsheikh to harar, and went to Mecca to learn about the deen. Once he returned back, he went to his hometown Jilaayle, west of Jowhar
Here, he started gaining support as a sheikh from the local people, growing more and more influential. This threatened the Italian colonialists so they sent an envoy to monitor the sheikh.
He was disturbed that he was being watched in his own lands.
He was disturbed that he was being watched in his own lands.
As a result, he started retaliating by attacking Italian ships since he managed to secure Ceel Dhanaane, controlling its ports and establishing troops. The Italians attacked back but the sheikh still had control over the city.
Whilst holding of the Italians at Ceel Dhanaane, the sheikh was simultaneously fighting with the Ethiopians. Ras makonnen, the cousin of Menalik II and the father of Haile Selassie claimed all Somali territory as theres. This led to many battles in modern day Hiran and Jubaland
With more than 16,000 rifles and man power in Hassan Barsane’s possession, he was successful in holding back the habeshis from controlling Somalia in the early 1900s. This got rid of the Abyssinian threat
By 1915, the Italians still couldn’t stop his influence, the made little progress securing small cities on the coast. The sheikh grew more famous and had loyal support from the people, with this chant ‘Su’aal Sh Xasan baa leh, siibista anagga leh’ being said all over Somalia
In 1924, a new minister called De Vicci was sent to Somalia. He wrote a letter to the sheikh asking him to give up his weapons and submit to Italian rule. Hassan barsane replied with
By March 1924, De Vicci sent soldiers to fight against the sheikh and his loyal supporters. They attacked from all corners and gave regular supplies to their troops. This put Barsane at a disadvantage but he kept fighting. Another famous chant was sung throughout Somalia
After fighting bravely for months, the Italians managed to infiltrate Jiyaale bringing the sheikh’s fight against colonialists to an end. When they were captured, De Vicci made sure all those who fought with the sheikh were killed, such as Abukar Gafle and Hussein Daqane
The only person who was not killed was the sheikh himself. De Vicci made sure he was alive so that he would be imprisoned. He was tortured and mutilated for standing up and rejecting all types of foreign rule.
At the age of 73, he died after living the life of a warrior AUN

Remember Sheikh Hassan Barsane as we celebrate our independence because without the likes of him, Italians would’ve had it easy. Even though the Italians won at the end, he will forever be a hero for fighting our caadows and defending our deen and dhaqan
