I’m not saying this to anyone specifically but I’m saying it to everyone in the athletic world as sports return. Please be mindful of performative activism. Definition “activism done to increase one's social capital rather than one's devotion to a cause.”
And remember these victims are people and they have family members and they’re not only hashtags and names within a movement. It’s one thing to put someone’s name on a sign. Whole different story for a corporation to print someone’s name on a jersey.
1) Ask permission because we assume everyone would want their family’s name somewhere. 2) What steps can also be taken in conjunction with the awarness you’re raising. 3) We have the opportunity to amplify the specific messages/demands of the movement.
We’re seeing a lot of changes happen really fast, from Hollywood to real estate. Which are likely well intentioned. BUT, I just want to encourage everyone to also stay focused on what KIND of changes this movement has been asking for.
