A few months ago I was seeing a therapist whose guidance basically amounted to "just get off the internet and go outside!" and I came away from every session wondering if I was even "mentally ill enough" to need therapy. He made me feel so stupid and immature.
Finally, I stood up for myself and told him I didn't want to see him anymore. I scheduled with a new therapist and we had our first session this past week. The difference was absolutely night and day. She helped me identify deep-rooted problems in the very first session.
I'm voicing this because if you've ever been to the wrong therapist, you might think you don't actually need therapy, or that therapists can't help you. That is NOT true. Sometimes it takes work to find the right therapist, but it is worth it to find them and get the right help.
I also want to note that this can be VERY difficult advice to follow. Depending on your mental illness and/or trauma, "firing" a therapist may be incredibly difficult to do. If you need to ask for help — have a friend draft an email for you or something — that's okay!
