i’m going to make a thread on why non lesbians cannot say dyke because it’s getting weird.
let’s start, the word dyke has been speculated to have many different origins but one i kept seeing was that the word dyke was used to refer masculine homosexual women for looking like men with the original term being “bulldyke” later shortened to dyke
the word dyke was used in many different novels to put down lesbian women for how they dressed (specifically butch lesbians) and who they loved as we all know at that time homosexuality was a crime.
this word was used by not only straight people but homosexual men who wanted to put lesbians down for sometimes dressing like them and so it became a slur as it was used against lesbians for their lack of attraction to men and attraction to women.
i will repeat, this slur origins from LACK of attraction to men AND attraction to women. the slur was created to specifically put down lesbians for their attraction and lack of attraction. this doesn’t mean it couldn’t be used against any other sexuality’s but this is the origin.
an origin of a slur is very improtant for its use in present day. the slur dyke was used to oppress lesbians for their lack of attraction to men and attraction to women, so why would a non lesbian say a slur that by definition means lesbian?
1- they don’t understand that an origin of a slur determines who uses it. no non black person could ever use the n word because that word was used to oppress black people for centuries and to specifically target them. just like dyke is specifically to target a lesbian
2- they are unfamiliar where the word came from and this is why research is very very important.
3- they are bisexual and think because they have an attraction to women they can use it which isn’t the case at all. bisexuals have attraction to men whereas dyke means lesbian

being a lesbian doesn’t just mean attraction to women it also means lack of attraction to men which bisexuals do not have. they are attracted to men and so that slur does not mean them, it again means lack of attraction to men and attraction to women.
bisexuals are called dyke because they get confused as lesbians because bisexuals have also been oppressed for liking every gender which in the past again seemed wrong. but the bisexual community has tried very hard to distance themselves from the label lesbian and have their own
bisexuals do not want to be called a lesbian because they also have attraction to men. do u see why they can’t use dyke? they have an attraction to men, they don’t want to be called a lesbian and have tried to distance themselves to have their own valid identity
so yes bisexuals are called dyke. should they be called dyke? no, no one should but that doesn’t mean u get to claim it. again dyke means lesbian, bisexuals are not lesbians as they have an attraction to men which lesbians do not have.
think of it like this:apple is called a fruit because it has seeds.u wouldn’t call a potato a fruit because it has no seeds.the origin of the word fruit means u have to have seeds to be one.potato doesn’t have seeds. it might have qualities as an apple, it doesn’t make it a fruit
and so referring that to bisexuals and lesbians, u wouldn’t call a bisexual a lesbian because they are bisexual. yes they both have attraction to women but bisexuals also have an attraction to men. dyke means lesbian and therefore bisexuals can’t say dyke.
maybe ur wondering why lesbians say this slur if it’s such a bad slur. well over the past decades lesbians have reclaimed the slur and use it to empower ourselves. this doesn’t change the meaning of the slur at all in fact it only enhances its meaning.
some lesbians are not comfortable with saying dyke and that’s ok because it’s still a slur that’s used against us to this day, but some are and u have to respect if we want to say or reclaim the slur since it literally means lesbian and has been used against us for so long.
again lesbian means an attraction to women and lack of attraction to men. dyke means lesbian. bisexuals cannot say it since they are attracted to men and are not a lesbian.
one last thing i’ll talk about is comphet. if u don’t know what that is it’s compulsory heterosexuality which a lot of lesbians exprience. we are brought up to be straight and to love men but lesbians don’t have an attraction to men, we have the thought ingrained in our brains
and so comphet is when we think we have an attraction to men or certain men. usually it is celebrities but not always. for celebs we know we can’t have them so the thought of actually being with them isn’t something we think of because we don’t see it actually happening
this doesn’t make lesbians any less of a lesbian. we just have this idea drilled into our brains since we have been kids, and it’s normal for lesbians growing up in heteronormative households to experience comphet. they are still a lesbian
this is something lesbians struggle with all the time including me. it’s very hard to see its comphet but lesbians are not attracted to men, we may think we are but we aren’t it’s just comphet and so lesbians can still say dyke and it doesn’t change the meaning of the word
dyke still means lesbian which means lack of attraction to men and attraction to women. so stop saying dyke if u r not a lesbian. we have asked u to stop so please respect what we r saying.

i want to add this since someone asked me too but the reason why non black sapphics cant say wlw is because many black sapphics were excluded from pride terms so they made there own and that was wlw. and so if u are not a black sapphic please do not use it
they were also excluded from lesbian terms too and created their own. such as their version of butch is stud. it’s the same thing they just created their own word due to constantly being excluded
