Odisha has a long history of maritime trade with other countries in ancient era.And maritime trade was responsible for enrichment of
Kalingan people in the early and medieval period.Archeological remains & vast literary text of Odisha provides the evidence of
the spectacular maritime activities
of Sadhabas (marchants) of Odisha & their proficiency in the maritime affairs during Vedic & medieval period.
The vaishya were the most prosperous class at that time.
The strategic location of Odisha with its long coastline is favorable for
this and traders and Artisan set out for the great journey to different corner of Globe.
Kalinga had a numbers of port at that time like Kati-kardhama,Manda,
Konark,Paalaru(Jaleswar),Puri,
Chandabali,Tamralipti,Telitola etc.
The people of kalinga were also skillful boat builders
The Sadhabas of Kalinga stared their voyage in the month of Kartika as the north eastern monsoon waves were suitable for sailing during the month of Kartik.They were survived by parents , wife ,daughters ,son and relative behind.
For their safety and well being the people of
Kalinga used to sails Akasadeepa in nearest waterbodies.Ladies used to perform Bandapana to the ships before they started.
The old idea of sea voyages & overseas tread brings wealth to the family still persist.People Odisha celebrate Boita Bandana on the day of Kartik Purnima.
Maa Mangala of kakatpur was considered as the Aradhya of the sea voyagers Sadhabas.They used to stared the journey after worshiping her.
Maa Mangala is belived to be resides permanently at the Manga(prow) of the sailing ship that's why named as Mangala.Their was no image of
Maa but a Swastika printed in red Vermilion at the prow was symbol of the goddess.
Maa manga sees the safety & wellbeing of the ships and the voygers.
When the ships came back after finishing the voyages the ladies of the household hurried to perform thr Bandapana before the men
and the cargo disembarked on shore
Kalinga was a Nation of traders and mariners .Many south and south-east countries shows the influence of Kalinga in their art culture,literature even places name.
Due to the dominance of Kalinga ships in the bay of bangle it was
also Known as Kalinga sea.
Even today people of Odisha celebrate its glorious past through festival like "Bali Jatra".
