For those who recently bought a bike, a quick guide on how to protect it:
1. Helicopter tape: protects frame from scratches, especially important if you lock up a nice bike at public racks. Also protects the frame from the chain. Available as a bike-specific kit or in a roll

2. Renter's insurance: will cover your bike even when it's stolen away from home. I got a policy from Lemonade which has zero deductible and only costs $3 a month for $2k coverage, on top of a $5-10/month policy.

3. Component locks - Hexlox makes magnetic bolts that can be removed with a special key, to lock down your parts. Pinwheels makes locks for wheels.
4. Bike lock - there's obviously a lot out there. I like the Tiger Mini - light and has a very firm mount which is surprisingly rare. If you need a lock for work or home, get something burlier and don't move the lock.
5. Airzound - super loud airhorn so drivers can hear you and not hit you.
Bonus: a bike helmet that's actually rated for *high* crash protection - see these university lab rankings. If you're going to wear a helmet, make it a good one.
Gloves are probably a good idea too - Rivendell makes cheap ($20), durable good looking ones https://www.helmet.beam.vt.edu/bicycle-helmet-ratings.html
