A few points about the surge in violent crime in Minneapolis, NYC, and other cities:

— The bill to dismantle the Minneapolis police department hasn’t taken effect. There have yet to be any cuts to the police budget. This isn’t the cause of the city’s violence.
— There have been reports of “de-policing” by cops angry about criticism, charges for cops who killed Floyd. If that’s contributing to the violence, I’m not sure the idea that cops will refuse to protect people in response to criticism/accountability for cops who kill is ...
— political instability
— a decline in perception of government legitimacy
— a decline in sense of belonging among marginalized groups
— loss of faith in the social hierarchy.

Feels like we’re getting a heavy dose of all four right now. https://www.amazon.com/American-Homicide-Randolph-Roth/dp/0674035208#aw-udpv3-customer-reviews_feature_div
