THREAD: I got my first death threat when I was 24. I'd graduated from law school & become executive director of @NARAL #ProChoice #Wisconsin. I came into the office to find a voicemail from a man saying I was a baby killer and someone was going to find me and do the same to me.
Over the years, I've developed pretty thick skin. I can’t even count the times I’ve received violent threats, esp. during #Act10 #wiunion or after I’d appear on FoxNews. Remember when I did that video & breastfed my beautiful baby?
We couldn’t even track the horrible things that were said about me and my family. Now, being called a fat b**** or a c*** or told I need to be raped just results in a #report & #BLOCKED. I go on about my day, trying not to think about how many people know where I live.
Most women who are outspoken #feminists on social media, especially @Twitter, know what that’s like. Men of color and LGBTQ+ people also know.
Just this weekend, at least 3 women are running for office in different parts of WI have reported receiving hate-filled messages.

These disgusting tactics are meant to silence us, tell us we don’t deserve to be leaders, and make us question ourselves. That’s bullshit. Every woman has a right to her own voice. To speak up without being shamed. To participate in social media without violent threats.
If you’re speaking out and being attacked by cowardly trolls, you’re doing something right. Keep running and leading.

My story is my story. Every woman gets to tell her own. I just know women, especially women of color & LGBTQ+ folx are targeted for hatred & violence at alarming rates, and no person shld ever have to endure threats and violence online or in life.
