The funniest part of the Parasite craze around the world was when non-Koreans just started wholesale making stuff up about Korea to feel like they were experts about a film.
I saw non-Koreans try to claim that Choong-sook was bad at her job and did not count as a skilled laborer because “she didn’t know how to cook a staple Korean dish” re: Jjapaguri, which was literally just a mix of 2 diff kinds of instant noodles popularized by a reality TV show.
Like “ah yes jjapaguri, the classic Korean dish comparable to kimchi and soondubu”??? It’s a meme snack food that got popular because of a reality tv????
Anyway, it's 2 AM and I'm eating jjapaguri. Yes, that's what made me think of how funny Westerners were re: Parasite.
Also fun was when Americans tried to make jjapaguri at home and made it exactly like it was in the movie with the Korean beef, not understanding that the addition of the beef was clearly symbolism re: the wealth of the Park family.
ALSO the people who tried to claim Jessica's little memorization song was an original song made for the film... it's a famous Korea propaganda song about Dokdo that we all learn growing up, please...
Can you imagine if some white people mixed Kraft mac with Annie's mac and called it "Krannie's" and it went viral because they did it on a reality tv show and then when you're like "what the fuck is a Krannie's" people were like "You don't know this traditional American dish?"
Choong-sook not knowing what jjapaguri is shows that she was too busy trying to make ends meet that she doesn't keep up with pop culture trends (jjapaguri in particular really blew up in like 2013~ so it's a dated reference), it's not an example of how bad she is at her job.
