A fun fact: My grandfather does not eat meat slaughtered by anyone except himself. Often when he visits, we buy him a chicken or a sheep and he slaughters himself. When he got arrested, he spent 3 years in jail without eating meat. He survived on pap and water/veggies.
There are stories of how they used to try to feed him meat while in prison by placing it in the middle or underneath the pap but he would always sense there was meat and would return the pap or give it to someone else.
He is a spirit medium and I think this is why he doesn't eat what's slaughtered by others. The ancestors that come to him maybe don't allow him to. An additional fun fact is that he doesn't drink alcohol at all, but when a spirit medium who drinks visits him, he drinks.
It's fascinating growing around someone like him, the things you see, if you tell people they wouldn't believe you. One time a spirit medium who had not visited for years came to him, walked us to a grave in the mountain of one of the ancestors, nobody knew about the gravesite
The gravesite was built in sort of great Zimbabwe kind of way. My granny knew the spirits or ancestors so well that she would know who was who depending on the voice. His voice and even walking ways would change depending on the ancestor visiting.
When a particular ancestor visits him, he will act like him. And he doesn't remember anything that he did or said when the ancestor was in him. So when people go to him to consult, they have to tell them to write everything down.
He can do traditional medicine in his normal state, like he knows which roots etc to use and all that. But often when people come to see him, he has to call upon a particular ancestor (my guess is that ancestor probably specialized in healing)
I read an article that among varemba, there were clans that focused on medicine, so I am guessing those would be the ones. There are other ancestors that come at different times for different reasons. Ancestors don't only come to him when he has to heal someone.
Also lol, when he got out of prison, my granny found her 2 oldest sons holding a spear wanting to stab him because they could not recognize him but then yeah, my granny knew her man.
Oh he was arrested because as a spirit medium, he was seen as a threat by the gvt.
