I've been in the software development field for 13 years, and not due a lack of interest, I've not had an opportunity to be mentored. Something I feel I'm missing on. I believe I've always came up with my plans with little help and very quickly I had to mentor others (1)
I've been struggling with some weaknesses for long and it's not easy when you're left to your own thoughts. I guess what I'm saying is, don't presume someone does not mentoring just bec they are senior engineers or look accomplished to you. (2)
And to all of the engineering managers, talk to your team members junior and senior about the benefits of mentorship, help them find suitable mentors and let them know it's ok to have a helping hand in their career development plans and in their personal development. (3)
Today I've actually without hesitance applied for some mentorship opportunity I saw online from someone I truly respect but it seems far fetched and it's what got me thinking, my God, if only I could mentor the 22 years old version of me. (4).
