During convo with a CISO yesterday, he mentioned some students being too lazy to dress appropriately for hiring events or follow up after. I reminded him that poor Black students often don’t have nice clothes to show up in & no one to teach them about following up.

Many of us are first gen college grads navigating all of this with no guidance. We didn’t grow up in the right neighborhoods & fam can’t give you game they haven’t learned themselves. Instead of assuming laziness, show some grace. Ask why they didn’t do what you expected.

I’m not excusing anyone’s lack of trying. But any Black person from a poor fam that made it to college against all odds is demonstrating that they are fucking trying. I’ve been that person. I’m still that person. Help them help themselves. Be a resource. Lead. Give. Try harder.
