Because there have been some big changes in my life lately, I figure it's time to update my "Station ID" to let people know what I mostly post about here, especially those who have recently started following this account. First off, thanks for connecting with me!
My proudest and most important roles are husband to @sarah_g_rice and dad to our two boys, Jiikwis and Ayaabehns (he was just born earlier this month)! We're proud to live in our traditional Anishinaabe territory, and we call Sudbury (AKA N'Swakamok) home).
I'm the author of three fiction titles, most recently the speculative/post-urban novel Moon of the Crusted Snow. It was published in the fall of 2018 and looks at a world-ending catastrophe from the perspective of a northern Ontario First Nation: https://ecwpress.com/products/moon-of-the-crusted-snow
Up until very recently, I was primarily a journalist. I had an 18-year career in the field, 14 of those years with CBC in Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, and Sudbury. My last job was as host of Up North, the afternoon radio show for northern Ontario. I enjoyed it thoroughly!
I left my job as a CBC Radio host and journalism altogether to make more time for my literary career and other priorities. I'll continue to do journalism in smaller doses for as long as I can, but I don't plan on returning to the industry in a full-time capacity.
I am still reflecting on my time as a journalist and will share more in the near future. There's an important spotlight on systemic racism in the industry right now, which is long overdue. So it's important to let those discussions happen and echo loudly for the time being.
Because I'm also free of the CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices, I can now share opinions on a variety of issues, which I couldn't before because of "objectivity". I have lots of HOT TAKES to share, but I'll do it sparingly, because I know that could get tiresome ;)
I'm proud to be Anishinaabe, so I post a lot about my culture, history, language, and wider Indigenous issues. I'm on an ongoing journey to learn my language properly, so that'll be a major focus now that I'm not working a regular full-time job anymore.
Along with my culture, music has been one of the most dependable constants in my life, so I always enjoy discussing my favourite musicians, their latest works, and live shows. So you can expect lots of posts about all kinds of music, but mostly heavy metal.
I'm a martial artist with a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a bit of experience in wrestling, karate, and Muay Thai. I'm very passionate about martial arts, and I'm a fan of MMA. I watch UFC regularly and often post about the big fights.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are my favourite sports team in the world, and I'm unapologetically a massive fan. I also support the rest of the major Toronto sports teams, and I eagerly await the big leagues' return to play in a safe way.
Right now our newborn is waking up and our toddler seems to need some extra attention at the same time, so I'll add to this later when I see fit. But again, thanks for following!
One last thing for now...Black Sabbath is the greatest band in the history of the universe.
OK this dude is back out, so I think I can wrap this up...
I read a lot and like to discuss current/favourite books. I focus mostly on literature by Indigneous authors, and I make an effort to highlight voices from diverse backgrounds. (I can’t post about current reads right now though because I’m on a prize jury)
I promote Indigenous artists from all disciplines as much as I can. I’ll RT their posts and share their latest and past works. There’s so much great art coming from Indigenous communities everywhere, from music to film to visual arts and more. It’s a really exciting time!
Racism has been another constant in my life and I believe it’s crucial for people in this country to understand just how prevalent it is, despite the traditional myth of Canadian benevolence and intolerance. Anti-racism has always been a part of all the work I do.
My favourite sandwich is the Clubhouse and I’m on an ongoing mission to find the best one in the world. You’ll see that thread emerge from time to time.
Anyway, that’s enough about me for now. Thanks for allowing me to indulge, and for following along. Go listen to Master of Reality and thank me later.
