What Is YouTube Charts, How Do I Use It, and What Does It Say About @BTS_twt: a thread.

I've been seeing a lot of screenshots from YT Charts in the past day or so, and it seems that a lot of people are confused about what the numbers mean, so this thread is to explain the site.
YouTube Charts is a website run by YouTube (YT) to track and report numbers on their platform. When you click on the link, you will see the first screenshot (ss). There are three main weekly charts that YT releases:
https://charts.youtube.com/
There is an artist chart, a song chart, and a mv chart. The artist chart tracks all views for an artists. The song chart tracks all views for a particular audio across many types of videos. The mv chart tracks all views on individual mvs.
YT Charts also has individual artist profiles where you can see more information about individual artists. Some you can search for manually (BTS) and some you can't (Suga, J-hope). BTS: https://charts.youtube.com/artist/%2Fm%2F0w68qx3
Suga: https://charts.youtube.com/artist/%2Fm%2F0zb47lp
J-hope: https://charts.youtube.com/artist/%2Fm%2F0y4ymv0
This is what the artist page for BTS looks like. There are many different features here to analyze views. If you tap on the blue line, you can see a number of views for each day. Be aware that daily numbers change regularly, sometimes by a few thousand, sometimes by millions.
You can sort your view by time (7 days, 28 days, 3 months, 1 year), or by location (by typing manually). YT Charts tracks where views come from down to the city in some cases. You can also see a breakdown of where the top viewed countries and cites are in the middle of the page.
There is a more extensive list of views by location if you click See All. By typing in the location box in the last tweet, you can generate a new chart for @BTS_twt. Here is what their US chart looks like. (Note the "countries" section is gone because you are now in one country)
Side note: similar to how you can view different countries in the artist profiles, you can also view weekly charts from many companies by clicking the button at the top left of the screen. You can also filter by tracking week (Friday to Thursday).
All of that was just intro stuff. This is the part I want to clearly address. The last part of the artist profile is the section that addresses songs. NOT MVS. Songs. It's a bit misleading because these numbers are presented with the most viewed video as the cover art
How this part of the chart works is exactly how the song portion of the weekly chart works: YouTube combines views on mvs, dance practices, some performances, lyric videos, reactions etc to find how much a song is being played overall. These totals make their way to weekly charts
So there is no controversy in the fact that it says ON has 561M views. That isn't views that were deleted from the mv or anything. It's views on videos using the ON audio that have been identified and licensed for BTS. There are performances that are not included due to licensing
There is one aspect that is concerning about that total, though. In theory, if you add up the weekly totals on the song chart for ON, it should match up. Instead, the weekly totals are about 70M short. That means YT counted the views but did not include them for tracking purposes
Other things to note: YT Charts updates weekly on Saturday evenings (for those in the US). The daily totals are usually about 2 days behind real time, and they fluctuate constantly. Often the daily totals do not add up to the weekly totals on the charts which is concerning.
Essentially YT has full control over what they want to give to an artist on the weekly chart. If they want to throw some views out, regardless of if they are legitimate, they have that ability & no one can stop them or question their methods. Their "transparency" is opaque.
So what does this mean for BTS?
It's a more reliable way to track consistency on YouTube. While YT can & does shift things around, especially during releases, they don't change much during regular weeks. That allows us to see a baseline for daily/weekly views and set goals.
Currently, according to YT Charts, @BTS_twt are the biggest & most viewed group in the world. So far in 2020, they have surpassed 3.6B views, and they average over 140M views every single week. The next most viewed group in 2020 is Im*gine Dragons, with half the views of BTS.
So don't be discouraged by our performance on YT! We are doing amazing! Our current baseline is what we got during the second week following the release of Persona. That's insane! This has been our best era yet! https://twitter.com/seokstoseok/status/1272379657866948610?s=19
Also one more note: Kworb is not a reliable way to track totals for artists. So when you look at the 2019 views & see a small gap between @BTS_twt and other groups, that was not accurate. BTS were the most viewed group in 2019 by over 1.1B views. https://twitter.com/seokstoseok/status/1276324671902924800?s=19
I will be posting 2020 view totals later on today, but overall @BTS_twt are now in the top 10 viewed artists with a much larger gap and no signs of slowing down. So, relax. Keep streaming & enjoying the music. Numbers don't really matter in the grand scheme of things.
2020 totals (through June) for those who are curious. The order of the list is still the same. #1 has 10B views now & #10 has 4.2B. BTS remain at #8 with 4.6B views 💪 https://twitter.com/seokstoseok/status/1277106489208049666?s=19
