IMPORTANT: We may be on the verge of really bad news for many Americans. While millions are still without work, an emergency program to increase unemployment benefits runs out in a few weeks. And @realdonaldtrump has no plan, besides pretending the #pandemic doesn't exist. (1/8)
States now say they'll stop making these cash payments around July 25. Do we think tens of millions are suddenly going to get jobs in the next four weeks? Think about how scared they must be, wondering how they're going to pay their bills.

We need a plan to help them ASAP. (2/8)
On top of extending cash benefits, we need to do more. The flight attendants union, led by @flyingwithsara, devised a plan to keep their workers in jobs, with a smart idea: the government gives grants to airlines specifically to keep employees on payroll during the crisis. (3/8)
Rather than just bail out an airline, the money is allocated only to protect workers, keeping them on payroll, with full pay & benefits. This enables them to keep meeting their rent or mortgage, & put food on the table. And be ready to do their jobs as soon as it's safe. (4/8)
Again, this is the opposite of a corporate bailout. The money cannot be used for CEO bonuses, or private jets. Or spending to bust unions, or stock buybacks. It's all about keeping people on payroll during this disruption to the economy. But there's more... (5/8)
We ought to do this for the economy at large. Using the airline package as a template, we should help other industries like retail & hospitality. @RepJayapal has a great bill that covers full wages of workers earning up to 90k & helps folks laid-off since March be re-hired. (6/8)
As a business person focused on my team members & the economy at large, I love this idea. We need to get people back to work & businesses on their feet while being smart & safe. This is an investment in long term job & wage growth that will pay itself back many times over. (7/8)
Most importantly, it shows the kind of smart thinking that real leaders must exhibit. Wishing away #COVID19 will only make it last longer.

We need to proceed in a smart way that takes care of the American worker's wallet -- but with an eye on their safety, too. (/END.)
