As public defenders we are witnesses to the lies told by cops to justify their racist policing and prosecutions. Police plant evidence, falsify documents, lie about why they arrest or use force and lie while testifying under oath. Here are just a few of my experiences:
Last year I had a DUI case. The cop came upon a car crash where it wasn't clear who was driving. The cop testified that at 2 specific occasions my client had told him that he was driving. On video what actually happened is cop said "you were driving"and client said he was not.
Cop also testified that at the crash site client's gf said he was driving. Again on video she said several times she was driving and he was not. The entire police interaction was on video so there's no other time these admissions could have happened. Judge found the cop credible.
Had another client charged with obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest. Cop said in complaint that client attacked him unprovoked. (Obviously if that actually happened client would have been charged with assault)
Got video surveillance from a nearby store. Shows client and cop talking. Cop then straight up punches client in the face. The prosecutor didn't drop charges when he got the video.
These lies just happened to be caught on camera. But in neither case did the cop get in trouble for perjury and in neither case did my client get their charges dropped. (Not to mention the cop punched my client in the face).
