I started reading "A History Of The Arab Peoples" by Albert Hourani.

It's a nice academic unbiased introduction to Arab history. Naturally, it covers some topics in more detail than others.

Here are some topics that are worth further reading

(a thread):
(Qays - Yaman) rivalry between the sons of Adnan (Qays) in the north and the sons of Qahtan (Yaman) in the south.

This seemingly trivial Arab rivalry has its fingerprints on today's political landscape.
The Zanj Rebellion against the Abbasid Caliphate.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zanj_Rebellion

The Rebellion's casualties were in the hundreds of thousands. It drained the Abbasids and caused it to lose many provinces.

(indirectly leading to the rise of the Isma'ili Qaramitians in Bahrain)
A great thread with details on 'Ali Ibn Muhammad, who traces his lineage to Abdul Qays of the Rabea'aa tribe, of Adnan (Qays), who have made Bahrain their home long ago. https://twitter.com/us6uwana/status/1103375515052900354?s=19
