Here in the state of Maryland, we've been trying to change the state song for 40+ years, which was written by a confederate "sympathizer". It's time to go. It was time in 1861, and it's overdue now. https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/md-politics/md-house-speaker-wants-to-repeal-civil-war-era-state-song/2020/06/23/e3a77250-b56f-11ea-aca5-ebb63d27e1ff_story.html
And another thing: the state flag, which is everywhere, and much loved, is a combination of the coat of arms of the colonial "proprietors" of Maryland (George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore), and the red and white cross that was used by confederate insurgents from Maryland.
More on the flag here. The combination of the two symbols was adopted after the Civil War. https://wjla.com/news/local/history-of-the-maryland-flag-confederate-symbols
People appear unaware of how recent our monuments, flags, songs, and symbols are -- as has been extensively reported, many confederate statues are from the post Civil War "Reconstruction" period, or even later - the 60s, for example, to counter civil rights activism.
I lived in Germany and have spent a relatively large part of my life there. Here's a good article about why you don't see Nazi statues there, although the history is extensively taught in school. https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/08/20/why-there-are-no-nazi-statues-in-germany-215510
