Thread: on beaches and England's bizarre, extreme, over-centralisation (1/7)
Overcrowding and bad behaviour on Bournemouth beach all over news today. Have seen reports of similar all over from Brighton to North Tyneside. Closure an obvious potential response (though NB I wouldn't presume to say it is right or wrong) (2/7)
Yet all the discussion is whether *national* government should or shouldn't act. Would fall to @MattHancock, I believe. Yet... (3/7)
...there are elected responsible authorities. Take @BCPCouncil as an example: 400k population; revenue budget nearly £300m a year; elected Leader and Cabinet; serious professional leadership team incl Director of Public Health (4/7)
Also elected, @PCCDorset, supported by professional police leaders, who would be able to contribute to a decision on this (5/7)
Strong arguments they will have much stronger handle on practicalities and trade-offs (health risk vs shutting down visitor economy, how to police a closure) than national government (6/7)
Why on earth not let them handle this? Plenty on @MattHancock's plate, which only he can handle. (7/7)
