A thread on the colonial nature of conservation:

We need to decolonize conservation for the sake of our planet and indigenous people that still live on their land, and those who want it back
under our profit driven system things wont get done unless 👇🏾
the capitalist can make a buck, leading to resource inefficiency and a unmanaged or half broken projects.
we can see this with our conservation system which was based on colonialism and eugenics, in the north american continent both Canada and the US further pushed the genocide👇🏾
of native ppl living on their land in the name of conservation for European settlers. the colonialist saw nature from the view point of the industrial rev meaning it was wild and separate from man, and latter pushed this view on the "wilderness" they saw in the north american👇🏾
continent and therefore saw any ppl living on it as pest or a disturbance to the natural balance
when in reality many indigenous groups were apart of that balance and helped created it. So national park services and the US prez teddy Roosevelt Roosevelt 👇🏾
pushed off the remaining natives off their land to conserve it for settler sport hunters, which lead to an environmental collapse, as the natives were using fires, forest management, and hunting for their lively hoods to manage the environment 👇🏾
this also had the added benefit of increasing biodiversity. This was lost when they were forced off and environmental collapse in many areas soon came along due to a lack of predators, invasive species and environmental destruction by settlers.👇🏾
after the parks were made hotels and viewing spot and tours were placed furthering environmental damage and the loss of and near extinction of hundreds of species. This legacy continues through capitalist production and conservationist NGOs which are Malthusian,👇🏾
and view overpopulation, indigenous ppl and the average, worker as the problem. Which can lead to genocidal governmental polices and a lower standard of living for the workers, making overpopulation worse(as when living standards increase population growth decrease vise versa).👇🏾
This Malthusian view has been demonstrated to be false as 80% of the worlds biodiversity are found on indigenous lands, in contrast to many wildlife parks which have failed in saving endangered species and the environment,👇🏾
and as this corona crisis has shown with many countries quarantined, emissions didn't drop by much showing us that its our economic mode of production thats the problem. 👇🏾
When you have a system based on infinite money making ie capitalism, you realize that forest wont stop being felled and fossil fuel production will only increase because without, there would be an economic depression and or economic crash. 👇🏾
if we want change,a better environment and indigenous ppl to have their lands protected and rights granted, we must move away from this capitalist profit driven system, and move towards a rational planned green economy ie socialism, where we can focus on green energy such as 👇🏾
thorium reactors, fusion and nuclear power. In turn making 人类命运共同体(community of shared future for mankind) 👇🏾
