Good Morning twitter world! I’m @DocWak & I'm taking over my @UMichSurgery chair's twitter for the day for #ShareTheMicNowMed. Ready to engage in all topics. I have two goals for today1. Don’t get fired (seriously, my wife would kill me)
2. Talk to this large audience about the importance of diversity in medicine. Specifically highlighting black men in medicine. . By highlight, I mean INFORM you that there are less black men graduating med school today than there were in 1978!! https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5909952/
YIKES!!!
This is a problem for many reasons but mainly because black men have the LOWEST life expectancy and HIGHEST death rate of ALL. . Lots of forces contribute to this (cough: criminal justice system) but increasing black men in medicine is 1⃣sure way to improve it. How, you ask? 👇🏿
Because
Black doctors inspire more black docs: @TraumaDocSF is the reason I became a surgeon after spending time w/him @UCSFMedicine

Black doctors do research about inequity: https://journals.lww.com/annalsofsurgery/Documents/Covid19%20and%20Racial%20Disparities.pdf
OK…that was just a shameless personal plug, but I mean he has 14k followers
Well thats a good starting point. Will check back in for part 2 later, I'm busy trying to get a @DocWak endowed professorship with my new found power
