I think this is way more complex than people give it credit for
First of all, 1-1 removal is not efficient against 3 opponents and you want only a few pieces of these in most games if you care about your cards' value in the game. Otherwise you are down cards while killing threats https://twitter.com/go_edh/status/1276288148843028480

So I'd recommend to have a few surgical and cheap tools preferably instant speed too to deal with the scariest things threatening /you/ specifically and X-1 removal spells for your 'removal count'. Besides that you can play sweeper effects to get back from being behind on board.
Why? You want to have enough removal to deal with the cards that are dangerous for /you/ but you don't need to be the person who's keeping the table in check. If you always have answers, you'll have to use them on things threatening everyone so you're down cards while others are
get the value from you removing threats. So I like having a little /less/ removal than most would recommend and use it more cautiously than others while leaving 'scary permanents' on the table for others to deal with or sweep them up later with a board wipe.
The final and most
The final and most
important part is this though:
You need to have enough removal for the kind of game /you/ want to play. If you have a few pieces to destroy permanents threatening your game plan and you can slow down others enough to move forward with what you came here for, that is sufficient.

Yes, having more removal is more 'optimal' but giving others some leeway to work towards their gameplan can be a much more fun game than shutting down everything and people drawing empty because all their engines die on the spot and nobody can stick threats. You don't need to
optimize for winning if you have other things you enjoy in the game. You need to optimize for your favored experience and more often than you might think this means running a little less removal than you would if you were to kill everything you might want to kill.
