1/ On the basis of the below, I'd argue the topic of Brexit is only toxic for the big two parties because it splits their votes under FPTP. https://twitter.com/AdamBienkov/status/1276462579343376384
2/ The irony is that both are now pursuing an incredibly unpopular policy whose damage has not even been fully felt yet.
Once the impacts/effects of leaving are felt, the polling could swing even further to rejoin.

3/ The rationale given by Labour for not talking about Brexit AT ALL - is that "it's done, it's over, let's move on."
4/ But that's disingenuous: the topic is not brought up - not because the population is happy with what's going on, but for internal party political reasons and for reasons which reflect the UK's unfair electoral system.
5/ Labour is silent because they need to win leaver voters over (for example the red wall seats they lost), and also because they face an internal lexit/remain factional divide within their own party.
The latter may be blowing up right now but it still exists.

6/ Just as the rabid right wing membership of the Tories is the tail wagging the dog of conservative policy making, the factions within the Labour party are the tail wagging the dog of Labour policy making.
7/ Neither of these memberships or the factions within them are necessarily acting in the national interest or indeed the political interest of their own party.
