The #FreelanceTaskForce have a meeting with ACE today at 11am. I will be live tweeting key info again. Thread will be below.
Q: Where are ACE currently at/what are you working on?
A: It is difficult to talk as we are involved in lots of conversations where things are constantly changing.
ACE have been thinking about:
- DCMS - conveying info from across sector
- how org and indies can work better in future
- when we can re-open Project Grants
- how ACE need to change moving forwards
- longer term spending review coming up
- our delivery plan
Our delivery plan is the document that outlines actions and programmes we will put in place to deliver our 10 year Strategy - Let's Create. Its a 3 year plan that helps the sector understand our priorities and the sorts of funds we might be delivering.
We (ACE) hope to come back to the Task Force when we have more answers to Qs. Without further govt help, we are limited in what we can do next. RE: DYCP (Developing Your Creative Practice) /Project Grants re-opening - hope we have more news in weeks, not months.
ACE hope to open Project Grants at some point this year, not next year. They are working into this Covid-19 effects.
Firstly important to make it available
Secondly what do ACE need to change about PG long term? (invited Task Force to feed into this conversation)
Q: conveying needs of freelancers to govt.
A: ACE are talking to people, incl those in the Transforming Leadership Programme, etc.
Best way for Task Force to have a voice in this?
If it's about place, talk to local office.
If national issue, person in ACE who leads on that area.
ACE are talking to govt but the noise coming from the theatre sector has been hit and miss with how it has landed.
We need to have unified voice vs fragmented comms to the treasury. So tell ACE what you need (via Task Force?) so they can take it to govt on our behalf.
Q: Equity/SOLT/ACE have been talking to govt for weeks, what have we done wrong? Other industries are moving forward but we are at the bottom of the list.
A: We are explaining to DCMS we are not like a shop, we have complexities that are different to other sectors, takes longer
Q: Support for those ineligible for SEISS (estimated 20-50% of freelancers)?
A: Emergency fund apps for individuals was more successful than PG.
We need to hear more about those ineligible for SEISS.
Q: We need to look after community + non-professional artists as well as artists.
Some people have 6 figure salaries in orgs while freelancers are struggling to get 5 figures. How can ACE limit funds to orgs that continue to perpetuate injustices to freelancers?
A: We want to hear more about ideas for a more just system.
High salaries used with belief that they attract the best talent.
V interested in this conversation - it is a workforce/leadership/governance issue
Q: Why haven't ACE made more effort to reach out to those who are struggling?
A: We tried by working with Outdoor arts, a-n, etc. We engaged with new people with the emergency funds.
Q: Funding apps inaccessible for some, what can ACE do?
A: We supply support to help fill in funding forms via Access Support Scheme + have officers around the country. Useful to hear what would be helpful for ACE to do. Task Force working group(?)
ACE will give Task Force a list of who to speak to for each issue we would like to raise.

ACE weighing up whether it is better to re-open PG as is or take longer + reform (position around match funding has changed etc)
Q: Lots of migrant artists, fall though gaps in benefit system. How can ACE support this overlooked group who bring unique value to art scene?
A: Happy to pick up conversation about specific issues we need to understand. (sorry I didn't catch whole answer)
